A HUMAN APPROACH TO WORLD PEACE

The Temenos Academy was delighted and honoured to welcome His Holiness The Dalai Lama to give the L.M. Singhvi-Temenos Interfaith Lecture for the year 2004. The Temenos Academy is an educational charity founded in 1990 by Kathleen Raine, the great poet and literary scholar who spent her life working tirelessly for a renewed recognition of spiritual values in the modern world. Kathleen Raine died in July 2003 at the age of 95: the lecture was dedicated to her memory.

The purpose of Temenos is to teach - in Kathleen Raine's own phrase - "the learning of the Imagination"; to offer education in philosophy and the arts in the light of the spiritual traditions of East and West. Its lectures, seminars, conferences and publications are founded on the belief that humanity cannot live by material values alone: that a tolerable future for the world can be achieved only if human society, its arts and skills, and its relationship to the natural environment, are grounded in a recognition of timeless spiritual values. Such values form the "perennial philosophy", that shared heritage of wisdom, generosity, justice and compassion which is at the centre of all the great religious traditions and spiritual teachings of the world.

An important aspect of the Temenos Academy's work has been its L. M. Singhvi Interfaith Lecture. Endowed by Dr L. M. Singhvi in 1998, when he was in Britain as High Commissioner for India, the lectures were given annually, over a period of seven years until 2004, by different speakers able to speak with authority from the heart of one spiritual tradition to address, from a deeply human perspective, those of all others and indeed of none. The other lecturers were Dr Singhvi himself; Seyyed Hossein Nasr; Dr Richard Chartres, Bishop of London; Professor Suheil Bushrui; Dr Kapila Vatsyayan; and Rabbi Dr Jonathan Magonet.
