In 2001-2002 John Stewart Allitt gave a course of 21 lectures for the Temenos Academy on THE DIVINE COMEDY by Dante. In the programme note about the course John Allitt wrote:
‘We will study the poem as working on more than one level of interpretation, and especially as a record of Dante’s own pilgrimage towards enlightenment. The poetry veils, as Dante himself emphasised, the mirabil dottrina of the Western Tradition. This fact is all too often overlooked due to an overemphasis on political interpretations, a fascination with an historical ‘who’s who’ in the Comedy, or misdirected ‘esoteric’ interpretations.
The lectures are designed to complement a reading of Dante’s great poem, enabling students to work through the text in either the original or in translation. Dorothy L. Sayers’ Penguin edition of THE DIVINE COMEDY is recommended for its commentary and notes.’
John Stewart Allitt (1934-2007) was a Fellow of the Temenos Academy and one of its principal founders. He taught Dante studies at Temenos for many years, leading seminar groups through a reading of the complete DIVINE COMEDY, and he gave numerous lectures on a wide range of subjects. This course represents the summation of his life’s study of Dante’s work, and is presented here as a resource for students of Dante, and as a memorial to a much-loved and respected teacher.
